Carl Craig and Ewan Pearson revealed as industry experts on the AKG Scholarship of Sound Programme

The AKG Scholarship of Sound is proud to announce a heavyweight lineup of expert support for the initiative in its second year. AKG last month announced that it will again be offering ten talented music producers and sound students from across Europe the unique chance to take part in the second edition of the AKG Scholarship of Sound, and today can reveal the full industry expert line-up for the programme.
The impressive ensemble of industry professionals will lead a series of intensive workshops at the Scholarship of Sound which takes place from 30th July – 6th August in Berlin. Comprised of a series of audio workshops and mentoring tutorials the sessions will advise the students on how best to develop a career based around their passion for sound and music.
AKG has handpicked the immensely talented team of successful professionals with years of knowledge and experience, to give the scholars an unparalleled opportunity to ask questions, pitch ideas and most importantly learn all about the electronic music industry. The tutors will educate the selected ten students in a broad range of experiences and ideas. Creative development sessions, designed to enhance participants understanding of production and mastering, will be interlinked with in-depth industry insight tutorials to highlight the skills necessary to succeed in the music industry.
AKG opened the search for candidates for the Scholarship of Sound on 14th February 2011 with applicants invited to submit their applications via www.akg.com/scholarshipofsound.
The deadline for applications is the 30th April 2011 after which the applicants will be judged by an industry panel. The ten winning scholars will be announced on 16th May with the Scholarship, flights, accommodation and living expenses covered entirely by AKG.
The 10 lucky winners, selected from the European regions, will take part in the scholarship from 30th July – 6th August at the Berlin AKG Studio.

About the experts
Carl Craig is described as a creative visionary, an electronic music icon, an esteemed Grammy-nominated composer, a world-class DJ and an ambassador for his native Detroit. The 41-year old producer has cultivated a unique path as an artist, entrepreneur and civic leader, guided by his tendency toward forward thinking. Craig released his first track in 1989 on a Virgin UK compilation album, with two singles following on labels run by his first collaborator Derrick May. In 1991 Craig launched his second record label Planet E with the groundbreaking EP “4 Jazz Funk Classics.” Craig serves as an inspiration and influence to countless artists in the underground electronic music scene as well as crossover acts like Underworld, Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem. His 1992 Innerzone Orchestra cut “Bug in the Bassbin” was credited as the spark that inspired the evolution of drum‘n’bass. Still running strong, Planet E will turn 20 in October 2011. Craig’s commitment to his home in Detroit is also something very personal. After launching a festival to rival that of any in Europe with the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000, Craig has shifted his focus to even more ambitious goals with the creation of his non-profit 501-C3 Carl Craig Foundation. Partnering with other non-profits to set up music scholarships, in 2010 the Carl Craig Foundation presented a five-day workshop during the Movement Festival, which exposed the students to professionals in sound engineering, music festival production, record/music production and musical performance.
Ewan Pearson academically accomplished English electronic music producer and remixer has been making records for 15 years. He works under various aliases, having recorded as Maas for Soma, releasing six singles and an album, ‘Latitude?, and under a number of other guises including World of Apples and, currently, Partial Arts for Cologne’s legendary Kompakt label. His remixes for the likes of Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, Seelenluft, Cortney Tidwell, Foals and Junior Boys are considered classics of the form and have been compiled on ‘Small Change’ (Soma, 2001) and 2007’s !K7 2CD retrospective ‘Piece Work’. Ewan has recently remixed work for October, Escort, Remain, Chapel Club, Crosstown Rebels and Seth Troxler’s new label Visionquest. He has also produced London’s Waylayers for Kitsuné, Montreal’s Flowers and Sea Creatures for Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly and is currently working with Oxford’s Trophy Wife for Moshi Moshi.
Following the release of his 1998-2000 Trilogy "1", "2", & "3" Stefan Betke moved to Berlin to become a Mastering Engineer for Vinyl and CD at Dubplates and Mastering. In 1999 he started his own label ‘scape’ as well as his a studio for CD Mastering called ‘scape mastering’. Betke is mastering for various producers and labels such as Mute, Third Ear, Minus, Wagon Repair, Bpitch Control and K7. Recently he has taken his music productions into a more dance floor direction while maintaining the original Pole sound design and creativity. With nearly two decades’ experience as a DJ, not to mention his acclaimed work as a producer and label owner New Kanada, Adam Marshall has amassed considerable respect from the electronic music community for his finely tuned blend of lysergic house grooves and smart, sharp techno.
Scott Monteith aka Deadbeat, the Canadian electronica musician, has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000, for labels such as Cynosure, Intr_version, Revolver, and scape. Deadbeat has performed at some of the world's most respected festivals, including Barcelona's Sonar, Berlin's Transmediale, and Montreal's Mutek.
Philip Sherburne is an American journalist, musician and DJ based in Berlin. He is one of the most respected journalists in the electronic music industry (Wire, RA, Pitchfork etc) but also a renowned producer, DJ and blogger.
Dominik Biba studied electrical engineering in Vienna specialising in audio and video technique. He works for AKG in the field of product development, mainly for new microphone projects. He also set up his own company (4solutions OG) for audio, light and video engineering in 2006. This company is specialized in setting up sound reinforcement systems for acoustical and architectural challenging environments. Among many other projects the company installed a high-quality sound system in the famous Großer Musikvereinssaal which is widely-known for the annual New Year’s Day Concert.
Rene Rennefeld, lecturer, producer, music-entrepreneur and songwriter has worked for more than 18 years in A&R for BMG and Sony BMG consulting in artist development, counting Lou Bega, H-Blockx, Deylen and Madsen amongst his projects. As producer Rene partnered with Alex Wende at Hansa at Tonstudio Berlin. Rene has 20 years experience in music publishing. He is creator and developer of nhow music studios at nhow Hotel Berlin that opened in 2010.
